What’s in a name? William Jones, ‘philological empiricism’ and botanical knowledge making in eighteenth-century India

‘What is Indian Spikenard?’, asked the eighteenth-century orientalist, Sir William Jones (1746–1794), in a famous paper, ‘On Spikenard of Ancients,’ published Asiatick Researches, Volume II (1790). The question serves here as point entry into Jones’s method for creating culturally specific plant descriptions to help locate plants their milieu.This paper discusses philological identifying jaṭāmāṁsī Sanskrit verse lexicon, Amarakośa, and materia medica texts, flowering with important medicinal properties great commercial value, ‘Spikenard Ancients’. Philology, Jones, was piece language study ethnology, undergirded by observational practices based on trained seeing, marking continuity between his botanical knowledge making. follows through textual ‘ethnographic’ explorations, he creates both Linnaean plant-object – Valeriana jatamansi mode description that encoded ‘native’ experience associated much-desired therapeutic commodity. result identification forced travel across epistemologies manifest itself an object colonial natural history.
